A New Jersey teacher who posted homophobic comments on Facebook is out on paid leave after her behaviour sparked controversey in her school district.
Vicki Knox,49, is a special education teacher in Union High School, not far from Newark, and her response to a school display promoting diversity in sexual orientation have landed her in the middle of a civil rights firestorm.
A photo was posted to her Bible group’s Facebook page of a school display board celebrating Lesbian Gay Bi Transgender History Month.
Ms Knox proceeded to comment on the picture, which was on a publicly-accessible page, saying that she couldn’t believe the school put up the display.
In response to a comment asking about whether the school had put the display up, Ms Knox wrote ‘Yes they did!!! And it’s still there! I’m pitching a fit!’
The comment thread continued to grow as did the religious and homophobic tenor of Ms Knox’s comments.Eventually she wrote about the teachings of Jesus Christ and the role of homosexuality in society. ‘Homosexuality is a perverted spirit that has existed from the beginning of creation. I do not pretend to know ALL things. Nor do I pretend not to have biases, failings and faults. But I know sin and it breeds like cancer!’ Ms Knox wrote.
Her comments, posted over two weeks ago, sparked protests outside of the school, with one group defending her right to free speech and the other to a ‘hate-free’ environment in schools.
She was questioned on the Facebook thread about the legality of her comments and her dealings with young children. ‘So what if I’m against blatantly displaying homosexuality anywhere but especially schools? So what? That is not a crime!’ she wrote.
Records show Ms Knox has worked in the Union school district for over 20 years, and she described herself as a ‘Jesus freak’ on Facebook. . . . .

I wonder who will be the ones to accuse Jesus of hate speech when he tells them “every knee shall bow, every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord?”
