The Pastor was wrong about Perry and Prerry was wrong about Mitt Romney!
The Evangelical Presidential “Poster Boy” Candidate shows once again why he is no different than the Universalism touting George W. Bush!
When will Christians STOP allowing themselves to be mislead by Politicians?
The pastor who introduced Texas Gov. Rick Perry at a conservative gathering Friday said rival presidential candidate Mitt Romney is not a Christian and is in a cult because he
is a Mormon.
Robert Jeffress, senior pastor at First Baptist Church in Dallas, endorsed Perry at the Values Voter Summit, introducing him as “a proven leader, a true conservative, and a committed follower of Christ.”
After his remarks, Jeffress told reporters that Perry’s religion is different from Romney’s.
“Rick Perry’s a Christian. He’s an evangelical Christian, a follower of Jesus Christ,” Jeffress said.
“Mitt Romney’s a good moral person, but he’s not a Christian. Mormonism is not Christianity. It has always been considered a cult by the mainstream of Christianity.”
Romney is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, whose members are commonly called Mormons.
Perry’s campaign said the Texas governor disagrees with Jeffress.”The governor does not believe Mormonism is a cult,” said spokesman Mark
Miner.
Jeffress had made similar comments about Romney before, during the former Massachusetts governor’s first presidential run in 2008.
I agree with Pastor Jeffress assessment of the Mormon faith. The Mormon Church does go against the normal teaching of Christianity. He was not being mean spirited in his statement. As a matter of fact, Dr. Walter Martin, in his book The Kingdom of the Cults, quotes Dr. Charles Braden, a liberal professor from Northwestern University who actually gives a good definition of a cult. Dr. Braden says,”A cult as I define it, is any religious group which differs significantly in some one or more respects as to belief or pracitce, from those religious groups which are regarded as the normative expressions of religion in our total culture.” I do not believe that Mormons would be in agreement with what born again Bible believing Christians believe especially that Jesus is God in the biblical sense. The Mormon assessment of Jesus would not be the same as that of Christianity.
My problem would be with Rick Perry’s reply that Romney is not a cult member. It shows that Perry is either a very misinformed Christian or that he is a product of false teaching. I do know that the tea party movement has been infiltrated by a domionist mentality which I believe has no scriptural basis. Romney will be who he is and Rick Perry must decide who he is. His reply would indicate that Romney is a Christian, but that cannot be. Perhaps Pastor Jeffress needs to reconsider his opinion of Perry or disciple him scripturally. It is not necessary to be caustic or abrasive, but Christians must define who they are regardless of public opinion.
